Matters of life and death

I am a palliative care physician with a lifelong love for storytelling and writing. As a graduate of Columbia University’s Narrative Medicine program, I’ve spent much of my career exploring the space where medicine, literature and the human experience meet. Illness doesn’t happen in a petri dish, but within the beautiful and often messy context of a life. Science gets us a long way, but when it comes to matters of life and death, it can only tell part of the story. I’m interested in the stories we tell, the one we leave untold, and how sharing them brings us closer.

This is a place for some of my writing, including essays, poetry and short stories inspired by the people and experiences that have shaped my work and life.

Away from medicine and writing, you’ll often find me playing soccer or ultimate frisbee, walking my mini-bernedoodle or dreaming of my future website about end-of-life care, sharing stories and reflections from people and families navigating death and dying. I’ve already got the name: YODO - You Only Die Once.
